When we think of the British Fashion scene, we think of trendsetters such as Kat Moss, Sienna Miller and the pinnacle of fashion Audrey Hepburn. When someone thinks of American style, they could think of icons such as Jackie O or the more modern Lady Gaga. But what is the difference between UK fashion and American Fashion? Is there a difference at all? Could the difference lie in designers? The UK has its share of great designers and brands, like the ultra-luxurious Burberry and in the States designers such as Marc Jacobs and Oscar de la Renta set the trends. But when looking at the style differences from these neighbors across the pond, what truly stands out, what makes US style different from UK style?
American style ranges from Southern cowboy hats and boots to New York City leather jackets, but one of the things that sticks out as a staple of American style is the T-shirt and jeans combination. The average American woman probably has an entire drawer or drawers filled with denim. They can be dressed up or down, can be tight or slack, but jeans will be there. America is seen as more casual and laid back, less trend oriented than their British counterparts. Even trendsetters in America seem to put together relatively simple pieces, but do so with great style.
Conversely, style in Britain seems to be more individual and out of the box. They appear to be completely put together without actually being put together. Prints, patterns and designs are no obstacle for the British female, and some women are liable to mix them up in one outfit. British fashion is known to be daring and seems to always have an edge. Eclectic would be the precise word to use for the atypical British style.
Could that possibly be the main style difference between the two countries? That American women just don’t take as many risks and are stuck in jeans? That would seem to be the case, but then you have style makers such as Lady Gaga and Rihanna breaking the trends. Style is style from Kentucky to Whales no matter what someone personal preference may be.
